Kilwins is a chocolate and ice cream confectionery located between Lake Michigan’s shoreline and Crystal Lake. Unlike other chocolate and ice cream shops, we make all our products by hand. We also use the same recipes our founders did—75 years ago.
Our passion for candy-making is reflected in our menu, from our legendary Mackinac Island Fudge to our Original Recipe Ice Cream. Our desserts range from soft and creamy to crunchy and savory. Kilwins was started by Don and Katy Kilwin back in 1947. They were two dessert lovers like all of us, who had a dream of making the best products using the finest ingredients. They met success early on and soon turned Kilwins into the confectionery we know today. Today, Kilwins is known for our recipes dating back to the 1940s, like fudge, chocolates, truffles, and caramel corn, and our newer creations like ice cream, milkshakes, malts, and sundaes.
Our team continues to uphold the tradition of sticking to the Kilwins’ original recipe. At our Frankfort chocolate store, we live to honor the names of Don and Katy Kilwin, who brought forth these amazing chocolates and desserts.
Our Original Recipe Ice Cream reimagines what ice cream can and should be. We introduced ice cream to our menu in 1985, and it continues to be a popular item, even during wintertime! Our ice cream starts as fresh milk and cream from local family-owned farms and ends as our “Super Premium” ice cream. Add toppings built around our Heritage chocolate and Mackinac Island Fudge (made by hand on marble countertops). Visit our Frankfort ice cream store and have a scoop of any of our Super Premium flavors.
Our ice cream-making process is completely monitored by Kilwins. We invested in first-rate, Kilwins-exclusive equipment and procedures to give our ice cream its signature taste and flavor. We closely monitor each part of the process to ensure our ice cream maintains proper consistency and temperature. The first step to that puzzle is picking out the right ingredients.
We only use the finest milk and cream sourced from local family farms. We only work with and trust farms whose dairy meets our strict standards to create the perfect ice cream base. Kilwins has our own climate-controlled trucks to safely transport our ice cream to our store.
If you see our specialized trucks on the road, you know these temperature-controlled Kilwins vans are transporting ice cream at the perfect temperature until it reaches the Frankfort ice cream store shelves. We ensure it is cold enough to never melt but not too cold that it is hard and frozen.
