Ever since we opened the very first Kilwins location in 1947, we’ve worked hard to create the best chocolates, fudge, and ice cream you can find anywhere in America. Today, we’re excited to share the original recipes straight from our Petoskey, MI, home to our Ridgewood chocolate store.
Our candy cooks, starting with Don and Katy Kilwin, work hard to create our chocolates, Mackinac Island Fudge, and ice cream. Our commitment is clear in every product we make. For example, our “perfect” caramel apples have been made the same way for over 70 years. We dip Granny Smith apples in caramel (made in copper kettles) and coat them in our customers’ favorite toppings. From nuts to candy to our Heritage chocolates, we make everything by hand.

Over the years, we’ve expanded our operations, both in terms of what we carry in our stores as well as the number of locations we have across the country. As we’ve grown, we’ve upgraded our cooking tools, but much of our cooking process has remained unchanged over the decades.
We still use some of the very same equipment that made our very first batches of chocolate. At the Kilwins Ridgewood chocolate store, we believe that our commitment to maintaining these classic techniques is one of the things that makes us so unique and special.
We’ve spent decades cultivating a store environment that captures the classic Americana feel from when we first opened in 1947. We believe that this combination of warm and friendly service, a beautifully kept store, and delicious treats bring out that nostalgic feel we strive for. This commitment to excellence is held by every single employee, from our head candy cook to our newest team member.
Our Ridgewood chocolate store is located right across the street from Van Neste Square Memorial Park, a beautiful spot to enjoy a scoop of ice cream on a warm summer’s day. There are also regular events at the park, the perfect time to grab some chocolates to sit back, relax, and enjoy the show with a delicious snack.
Chocolate is just one part of what makes our stores so special—particularly when it comes to certain flavors of ice cream. We started making and selling our own ice cream in 1985.
We took what we learned from decades of chocolate making to create some of the most delicious flavors you can find anywhere in America. Like our chocolates and fudge, we source ingredients from local and family farms to ensure that we’re only using the freshest and best to create our premium base.
Once we have our base, we mix in amazing inclusions (chocolates, caramel, hand-chopped nuts, and more) to create each individual flavor.
